Weird strange and bizarre news of the week.
Thanksgiving is supposed to be about family togetherness and gratitude, but it can also be a day of super-high stress. If it isn’t the uncle pushing his conspiracy theories at the dinner table or the great-grand-niece who simply refuses to stop crying, there’s always something going on to send your blood pressure sky-high.
In honor of an annual tradition that isn’t generally supposed to end in homicide, we present three of the weirder crimes ever committed on Thanksgiving.
Trivial Pursuit turns not-so-trivial in Pennsylvania
In 2012, police responded to a call about an altercation in Port Matilda, Pennsylvania. According to reports, two Trivial Pursuit junkies got in a verbal fight over the answer to one of the trivia questions. Soon things turned physical, with one man threatening another with what was reportedly a hatchet. When police examined the “hatchet” at a later time, however, they realized that it was actually a piece of drug paraphernalia.Weird
Lady Gaga’s fans break in and camp out in her garage
Also in 2012, while Gaga was on her “Born This Way ” tour in Brazil, she took to Twitter on Thanksgiving day to talk about finding (via security camera) 35 fans in her garage back home.
North Carolina carjacker gets the (frozen) bird
As Irene Moorman Bailey was loading groceries into her car outside a Fuquay-Varina grocery in 2008, a man who had just robbed a gas station across the street ran over and began beating her in an attempt to steal her car keys. Fortunately, some fellow shoppers saw what was going on and ran over to help her.
One of those bystanders grabbed a frozen turkey and slammed the attacker in the head. The attacker managed to recover and drive off, hitting five other cars in the lot. When police later found the attacker and the car, they had to take the suspect to the hospital — he had a major head wound from the frozen bird. “Serves” him right!
A suspect believed to be the so-called “Cookie Monster” robber has been apprehended by Texas cops.
Authorities claim Eugene Bradshaw — along with Kristy George — is responsible for 33 armed robberies of Houston restaurants during a two-month span. During the hold-up, the duo would allegedly ask for a cookie in addition to cash.
“We called him the ‘Cookie Monster’ because he would ways pick up a bag of cookies like he was going to buy them and then when the cashier was ringing them up he’d produce a weapon and demand money,” Deputy Thomas Gilliland tells PEOPLE. “George, his accomplice, would stay in the get-away car while [Bradshaw] was inside,” Gilliland adds.
According to Reuters, Bradshaw was ID’d by cops as the person pictured in surveillance tapes with a bag over his head. The pair have been charged with suspicion of armed robbery with a deadly weapon.
A South Carolina man instantly regretted his decision to tell an exotic dancer he thought she needed to lose a few pounds.
The unsolicited comment was uttered by Kyle Yeomans, who told police he was at Derriere’s Gentlemen’s Club when he was approached by an “annoying” stripper.
Putting his own intoxication at “an 11 out of 10,” the 23-year-old claimed he became tired of the woman trying to talk to him. So he put an end to it by saying “that she should go to the gym and lose weight” and noted that she had a “muffin top,”The Smoking Gun reports.
Well, needless, to say, the dancer didn’t take this kindly. According to Yeomans, the 115-120-pound woman hit him in the face several times before he was dragged out of the club by “rough” bouncers.
Police noted the man did have injuries consistent with him being assaulted. In addition, a fellow patron told cops that he witnessed a stripper hitting the 23-year-old in the face several times.
Taking a night to mull it over before contacting police about the assault, WMBF News reports Yeomans declined to press charges and only requested that a report be filed.
A crooked cop who was convicted of stealing a gold chain and cash from a dying man had his pension revoked by the state of Connecticut.
On July 16, State Trooper Aaron Huntsman pled guilty for third-degree larceny and tampering with evidence after boosting a gold chain valued at $5,500 and $3,700 in cash off of John Scalesse, who was dying following a motorcycle crash in 2012. According to the Hartford Courant, Huntsman admitted to a supervisor that he had the chain but had lied about the missing money — which was found on the front seat of his car.
Sentenced to a year of prison in October of last year, the former trooper told a judge he would turn down his pension if he got a plea deal — which he did. However, the CT Post reported he didn’t follow through and was slated to get his pension in 2024.
What prevented this is a 2008 law which allows pensions to be revoked if someone commits a crime related to their job. This state law allowed a judge to block his $1,530 a month payment which he would have been eligible for. The Post also reported he now works as a doorman for a local strip club.
Marguerite Scalesse, the mother of John Scalesse, said, “I’m glad a judge said he can’t have his pension. I would have been very disappointed if he had gotten his pension, because after all, he brought this on himself. No one did it to him.”
A beloved New York City dentist was taken into custody on Friday and is now facing multiple charges including child pornography and trading dentistry services for meth.
The New York Times reports that John Wolf, a dentist who practices in Chelsea, has been accused of a number of hateful crimes. According to a criminal complaint revealed last week, Wolf may have knowingly spread H.I.V. at the wild sex parties he hosted. He may have punctured holes in condoms with the express goal of spreading the disease to various partners. The dentist also reportedly told his drug dealer — who eventually ratted him out — that guests would have sex with animals at these parties.
The NY Times also says that Wolf possessed a flash drive with 246 files on it – most of them child pornography.
The case unfolded last spring when the report says Wolf’s drug dealer, who was not identified, was arrested at the airport. In exchange for a lighter sentence, the dealer spilled everything he knew about his client/dentist. That alleged dealer, who was charged with conspiracy to distribute narcotics, is hoping for leniency.
The informant was able to make recordings of Wolf for the prosecution. The dealer says Wolf showed him videos “of infants and toddlers being sexually abused by adults.” Those images also included rape.
What ultimately led to Wolf’s takedown was the dealer telling Wolf his roommate was into child pornography as well. The NY Times says that roommate was actually an F.B.I. agent.
Wolf is now facing charges including possession and distribution of child pornography and conspiracy to possess methamphetamine with the intent to distribute it.
Wolf’s attorney, Marc Agnifilo, told the NY Times on Friday: “He was woken up at 5 o’clock in the morning, and woke up into a day where his life is going to be completely different. These are charges that are very hard to weather, and I think he’s understandably shaken.”
According to the Huffington Post, the FBI is still looking for victims in this case. If convicted, Wolf could spend 20 years behind bars Weird.
