Weird news of the week
A man who was at the Our Lady Queen of Heaven Roman Catholic Church in North Lauderdale — ostensibly to celebrate his niece’s baptism on December 20 — decided to break one of the Ten Commandments while in the house of worship.
According to police, 30-year-old Jonathan Somps snuck away from the baptism for a few moments, and was caught on video surveillance as he allegedly snuck up behind Aida Campos de Sanchez, an 84-year-old woman praying in the chapel. In the video, Somps can be seen slowly walking around the small chapel, appearing to scan the three older women.
At one point, he ducks back and leans toward the chair with the elderly woman’s purse on it. He can be seen reaching forward, grabbing the purse from the chair and running off with it. The purse was reportedly found two days later in the church’s cemetery. Unfortunately, anything of possible monetary value had been taken.
Somps was not apprehended until January 15, when he was caught driving under the influence. In addition to the DUI, Somps was charged with grand theft. According to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, Somps was released on bond on January 16
The temperature was a bone chilling -5.8 degrees when 21-year-old Elizabeth Luebke vanished from a party, reports USA Today.
Investigators say Luebke’s body was found outside a home not far from where she vanished – she was frozen to death, reports Fox 6. She was apparently in the area for a concert before going to the party.
The medical examiner prepared a report, one obtained by the Fox station. It says a surveillance camera in the area of the neighborhood “noted the decedent to collapse” at the address where her body was found. That was around 4:30 a.m.,but a passerby did not find Luebke until nearly five hours later that morning.
At the time of the grim discovery, Luebke was only wearing shorts, stockings and a tank top. Fox 6 says a sweater was found on the ground nearby.
A friend who does not wish to be identified told the station, “When she got here, she was really, really drunk and she got mad at her other friend and she stormed out.” Luebke did not return and someone from the party then called her mom.
The report says Luebke’s mom drove more than an hour to the Milwaukee area to file a formal missing persons report.
The friend also told Fox 6, “She’s a really sweet person. I hung out with her at another show when I went to Oshkosh. She’s a really nice person – a really sweet person. It’s really sad. She’s only 21. Such a young age.”
Glendale Police Department’s Joel Dhein said, “If you can stay in groups – at least with somebody – and that’s just general personal safety.”
An official cause of death has not been released.
This is one for the ages. A monk upset that he accidentally stepped on an insect reacted in the best way possible: by slashing the tires of 162 cars.
According to Fox News, Julian Glew has been dubbed the “Pocklington Piercer,” after he took the unorthodox steps to express his rage “without hurting people.”
The 45-year-old has lived in the woods for more than two decades. However, his tire-cutting actions have led to an 11-week jail sentence for the man who apparently was supposed to be striving “for a peaceful co-existence,” according to the judge.
Glew’s lawyer, Joanna Markham, commented: “It was an insect which appears to have upset him; he was not in a good way and on three evenings he has gone out and randomly slashed tires.” Markham also pointed out that he has a history of mental illness.
Not only did Glew avoid sentencing for his three counts of criminal damage in October, the Daily Mail says he went on the run for three months before being apprehended.
“Sentencing Julian Glew to 11 weeks in custody is good news for the residents of Pocklington and justice has been seen to be done,” Humberside Police Inspector Joanne York said.
An Arizona woman is charged with pre-meditated first-degree murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after police say she allegedly shot and killed a college student during a road rage incident.
ABC 15 reports that 32-year-old Holly Davis is now being held on a $1.5 million dollar bond after she allegedly approached 19-year-old Yue Jiang’s vehicle and shot her multiple times.
The shooting occurred after a minor accident between the two, the report notes.
At the time of the crash, the victim was inside the vehicle with her 21-year-old boyfriend. ABC 15 says the boyfriend got out of the car to take a look at the damage to the vehicle when Davis emerged with a gun.
After the killing, police say Davis fled the scene and was hiding out in a home when they found her. Investigators say, according to reports, they aren’t sure if the victim tried to drive away when she saw the gun or if she lost control of the car after the shooting, but the victim struck another car in an intersection. All of the people inside the vehicle were hospitalized and expected to survive, reports say.
According to the Arizona Republic, Davis said she had all intentions of wanting to be shot by police that night and she even left a note behind claiming she was going to allegedly commit a “violent act.” According to booking documents obtained by the publication, authorities found the note inside an apartment in Mesa where Davis was staying for the past week.
In addition to the murder charge, the Arizona Republic says Davis is also facing charges of disorderly contact with a deadly weapon and prohibited probation. She was convicted previously for lawful stop and fleeing in Missouri.
ABC 15 says Jiang is an International student from China. There’s a makeshift memorial set up at the scene of where the deadly incident took place.
Arizona authorities are calling a case in which a 3-year-old child was found eating feces and restrained with duct tape as “one of the most disturbing incidents” they’ve seen in recent memory.
“This is one of those cases that really just shocks the soul,” Mesa Police Chief John Meza commented at a Tuesday news conference, the Huffington Post reports.
According to the Post, a little girl was rescued from inside a closet, sitting in a garbage bag. And if that wasn’t unsettling enough, the child was eating — and covered in — feces. Details involving her abuse are unclear, and a probable cause statement pointed out that she may be nonverbal.
The child’s mother, Mayra Yomali Solis, and babysitter, Francisco Javier Rios-Covarrubias, have been arrested for their role. A witness who tipped police off had allegedly met Rios-Covarrubias for sex and smoked methamphetamine with him, and claimed Rios-Covarrubias had offered the child up to have sex with.
“The suspect wanted to have sex with other people and said he put the child in the closet because she was too loud,” officers said, according to KTLA.
The tot’s mother, Solis, is allegedly homeless and left the child with the 30-year-old babysitter for days at a time over the past month. He would watch the child while the mother worked and the mother would reportedly see the little girl for one day a week. She is also believed to have shaved her head to collect fraudulent cancer money from donors.
While the 3-year-old had tons of scars and bruises, Solis admitted to police that she’d seen the injuries but did not seek medical attention because she thought the child had simply fallen down.
“Fortunately the child was recovered before any more additional harm could be done to her,”police said in a statement.
Also suspected of sexually abusing the child, Rios-Covarrubias was booked into jail on charges of sex trafficking, kidnapping, sexual conduct with a minor, and child abuse. Solis is also facing child abuse charges.
A man was arrested after reportedly forcing his girlfriend to walk naked down a sidewalk in Harlem, according to Pix 11.
The 24-year-old man reportedly punched and choked the young woman in front of her kids before videotaping her humiliating walk through the cold winter streets. He reportedly did it because he thought she was cheating on him.
His girlfriend — who reportedly said he threatened to kill her if she didn’t follow his orders to perform the naked walk — filed a report against him, and now Melo is apparently awaiting arraignment on assault charges in Manhattan.
On Instagram, Melo reportedly wrote that he feels “bad as a man” and wrote, “Maybe I made a mistake, doing what I did, taking her out naked in the beginning. If I could go back in time I wouldn’t do it. Because in my mind, so much has happened to me.”
He also apparently posted a satire video mocking the evil event with a man pretending to be her.
Dusty Rae Ingram was being processed into the Okaloosa County Jail on an apparent probation violation when she got herself into even deeper trouble. Or, we might say, her genitals got her into deeper trouble.
During the requisite strip search, police found a plastic bag containing pills in the 38-year-old’s vagina. When confronted, Ingram reportedly told police she had no idea how the drugs ended up there. She reportedly identified the pills to police and told them she had a prescription for the drugs.
She also reportedly said that she kept the pills in her purse, and therefore had no clue how the bag might have migrated from her purse to her vagina. She eventually admitted that she knew the pills couldn’t be brought into the correctional facility, and got a felony charge of introducing contraband into a detention facility added to her rap sheet.
A Minnesota police officer is accused of taking to social media to flagrantly suggest that drivers run over Black Lives Matter protesters.
According to the New York Daily News, St. Paul Sgt. Jeffrey Rothecker has been suspended pending an investigation that he wrote: “Don’t slow down for any of these idiots who try and block the street,” under the pseudonym JM Roth on Facebook. The officer is believed to be referring to an MLK Day parade in which Black Lives Matter protesters were expected to participate.
“Since they are trying to block the street and/or cross where there is no crossing you should not be charged with anything,” he allegedly continued. “Now, these idiots could try and sue you in civil court, but remember that it will be jury trial and so most likely it will come out in your favor.”
Though the event took place with no injuries, Andrew Henderson of CopBlock took a screenshot of the troubling posts and reported them to the police force.
“I mean to me, that’s like totally unprofessional for an officer to say ‘Run them over,’”Henderson said. “His actual statement is ‘Run them over.’”
Following Henderson’s accusations, Sgt. Rothecker has been placed on administrative leave. Fox 9 reports that the Facebook account he’s alleged to have used has since been taken down. The department also addressed the controversy on their own Facebook account, calling the man’s comments “offensive, disappointing, [and] concerning.”
“There is no room in the Saint Paul Police Department for employees who threaten members of the public,” St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman said in a statement. “If the allegation is true, we will take the strongest possible action allowed under law.”
A Pennsylvania dad is accused of leaving his three young kids in a freezing-cold car so he could watch the NFL playoffs at a friend’s house.
James Grusofski was arrested after his 4-year-old son was found wandering the streets unsupervised — and without shoes, a coat, or socks in 30-degree weather. According toPenn Live, the dad had left his three children, ranging in ages from 9 months to 7 years old.
Things grew worse when police got involved, however. Upon telling the 33-year-old dad that he would be charged for the incident, the incensed man allegedly punched the officer in the face, leading him to be subdued with a Taser, CBS Pittsburgh reported.
While the father was taken to a local hospital for evaluation, WPXI News revealed that he was given medical attention not only due to the scuffle but because he had elevated amounts of alcohol and cocaine in his system.
“It is very surprising this would happen,” neighbor Renee Scholato told CBS Pittsburgh.“They were always outside with their children, and they always do things with their children when he’s off work. I see them in the backyard.”
Grusofski is facing charges for endangering the welfare of children, aggravated assault on a police officer, and resisting arrest
Doneisha Renee Carter of Zachary, Louisiana has been arrested after her 2-year-old son showed bleeding on the brain indicative of intentional trauma as well as human bite marks on various areas of his body.
Carter reportedly took the child to the emergency room last month after he had headaches, vomiting, difficulty eating, and possibly experienced at least one seizure. A CAT scan showed bleeding on the toddler’s brain. Police said the doctors did not believe the bleeding was the result of a potential seizure, but that it was likely caused by intentional trauma.
To make matters even more troubling, they found an undisclosed number of human bite marks in various stages of healing scattered over the tot’s body. The child was admitted to the hospital, and the hospital notified authorities. His brain injuries are expected to require both physical therapy as well as speech therapy as he grows.
When police first questioned Carter, she reportedly told them she had thought the bite marks were either from bugs or her 4-year-old nephew. Medical experts determined, though, that there was no way the bite marks could have been caused by a 4-year-old. Carter also attempted to blame the child’s temper for the seizures, and told authorities she had visited the emergency room on two other occasions.
Police interviewed family members, who told them that Carter either totes the toddler around with her late at night, or leaves him home unsupervised. When Carter failed to show up for a follow-up interview this month, she was arrested and charged with cruelty to juveniles, as well as being a fugitive from justice. According to the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office website, Carter is currently being held on $25,000 bond. Still no update on the toddler’s condition.
An Amish minister and cabinetmaker has been charged with first-degree murder after police say he confessed to killing his wife nine years earlier.
According to the Bowling Green Daily News, 39-year-old Samuel Borntreger contacted police in Kentucky on Sunday after church to pour his heart out to them. When deputies arrived, according to the report, Borntreger said his former wife Anna Borntreger did not die of liver complications, but that he had actually poisoned her.
Reports say the couple lived in Missouri with their four kids at the time. After her death, Borntreger remarried and quickly moved to Kentucky.
As to why the husband decided to come clean now, Sheriff Keen told the Bowling Green Daily News, “He was just burdened with it.”
According to a probable cause statement obtained by the Huffington Post, Borntreger told Sheriff Keen, “He told us that he had fallen out of love with her… [and] put antifreeze in some type of liquid that he gave her to drink.” In addition to the antifreeze, the report says the husband also admitted to putting battery acid “up her rectum” on at least two occasions.
According to the Huffington Post, Missouri authorities say they have exhumed Anna Yoder Borntreger’s body. It is currently going through toxicology tests.
Sheriff Keen said, “This is very rare for me. In my 23 years in my business … we’ve had people admit to a lot of things, but to initiate it from the beginning – to call us and say, ‘Hey, I need to tell you something’ – this is a first for me.”
After Anna’s death, reports say Borntreger had four more children with his new wife. It is not clear whether or not his current wife had any idea about how Anna died.
Borntreger is being held on a $250,00 bond at the Barren County Detention Center.
The crowdsourcing site GoFundMe has shut down a campaign launched by a Tennessee woman who claimed she was trying to recoup her Powerball spendings. (Many folks think her initial GoFundMe post was a joke, however.)
According to the New York Daily News, Cinnamon Nicole started a GoFundMe after she says she spent her life savings on a chance to win the $1.6 billion jackpot. With 1 in 292 million odds of hitting the jackpot, needless to say: she didn’t win.
In the now-removed post, Nicole asked supporters to help raise $100,000. Not exactly to recover from her losses, but so that she could allegedly buy more tickets. Her initial campaign read:
Please help me and my family as we have exausted [sic] all of our funds. We spent all of our money on lottery tickets (expecting to win the 1.5 billion) and are now in dire need of cash. With your small donation of at least $1.00, a like and one share, I’m certain that we will be able to pick ourselves up from the trenches of this lost [sic] and spend another fortune trying to hit it big again! PLEASE, won’t you help a family in need. DONATE NOW.
The Tennessee woman raised more than $800 before her page was shut down. But there wasn’t a consensus whether Nicole’s GoFundMe was created in jest or not. While some took it as a joke, others were outraged by what they thought was a serious request. Nevertheless, the site decided to put the kibash on the whole thing — serious or not.
GoFundMe Media Director Kelsea Little told PIX 11 in a statement: “The campaign in question was removed for a violation of GoFundMe’s Terms & Conditions.”
An Italian woman strolled into a fire station last week with an unusual request: to be freed from her locked chastity belt. Apparently the unnamed woman had lost the key. (And apparently she forgot that no one wears chastity belts anymore?)
According to the Huffington Post, the 60-year-old woman in question first told fire crews in Padua that she “needed help opening a padlock.” Then she changed her tune and showed them the iron contraption under her clothes.
The workers busted open the lock and reportedly tried to determine whether the woman may have been forced to wear it by an abusive partner.
Nope — the woman reportedly told the firefighters she wore it because she didn’t want to get involved in a sexual relationship. Other reports say she wore it because she was so alarmed by all the sexual assaults and violence against women happening in the news.
An unidentified Detroit man has learned that alcohol is not always the safest method to eliminate bedbugs.
It all reportedly began around 4:30 a.m. one Sunday morning in St. Antoine Gardens apartments in Detroit’s Midtown. According to a spokesman for the mayor’s office, the man thought that a previously eliminated bedbug infestation had returned. He attempted to spray rubbing alcohol on his couch and his own body to destroy the critters.
That would likely not have been an issue if he hadn’t then lit a cigarette while sitting on that same alcohol-soaked couch. He reportedly tried to use the cigarette to burn one of the bedbugs. Of course, that set the couch alight. The fire quickly spread to his body and throughout the room. Within minutes, a woman elsewhere on the building’s eighth floor heard shouts from the hallway. When she looked through the peephole, all she could see was smoke.
She reportedly managed to crawl to the stairwell and made it to safety. Somehow, the unidentified firebug escaped the inferno he’d started. He did not, however, escape his injuries — witnesses described his skin as melting off of his body. He was rushed to the hospital for treatment, and was last described as having sustained moderate burns.
The mayor’s office is working to help the displaced tenants find other housing while the building undergoes repairs. At least 10 units in the complex have been declared uninhabitable in the wake of the fire.
This is not the first time a fire has been sparked from an attempt to kill bedbugs in Detroit. In November of 2015, a very sleep-deprived and desperate Sherry Young accidentally destroyed her entire apartment complex in an ill-conceived attempt to rid herself of the insect menace.
