yes Kiddies it is time once again for your Weird and strange news.
Charles Campbell Jr. of Berrien County, Michigan, has been sentenced to a minimum of 19 months and up to 15 years behind bars after he left his intoxicated girlfriend outside in freezing temperatures. Unable to figure out how to get back inside, the woman froze to death.
The girlfriend, Tamika Hurd, was dropped off at the home she shared with Campbell on February 22, 2014, after a night out drinking with her brother. A police investigation discovered that Hurd had managed to take a shower, and ended up still damp when she went back outside in below freezing temperatures in only a short-sleeved shirt and jeans. She had no coat, hat, boots, or gloves, and no phone that might have allowed her to call for help.
Hurd somehow ended up in the house’s enclosed, but unheated, porch, but was too intoxicated to get back into the house. At some point, Campbell took video of Hurd as she attempted, and failed, to get back into the house. According to reports. Campbell can be heard on that video chastising her for getting so drunk, and belittling her for being so incapacitated. He reportedly left her on the porch afterward and went to sleep. The next morning, he reportedly walked past her frozen body on the porch to go shopping.
Campbell was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in Hurd’s death. As she handed down the sentence, Judge Angela Pasula said in response to his argument that he had tried to help Hurd, “You did not try to help her, on this occasion. Her death was avoidable, unnecessary and tragic. There’s a fine line between tough love and compassion. The victim was highly intoxicated and your failure to assist her may have risen to cruelty.”.
It’s a twisted story in North Forsyth — one that has a mother behind bars and her 14-year-old daughter charged as well. It all began when 47-year-old Elaine Sunwoo Williams allegedly attempted purchase a baby on Craigslist for her teen daughter.
After being tipped off to the odd request, a cop posed as an interested party. The undercover officer reached out and asked to meet Williams at her house. She agreed.
That’s when the plan blew up. Williams was arrested, and according to the report, the reason for her “baby box” scheme was because her daughter simply “wanted a baby and would get one with or without her help, so she decided to help.”
Williams is charged with domestic-unlawful advertisement/inducement for adoption of children and is held on a $5,610 bond. Her daughter, who is not named because of her age, is facing the same charges – but she falls under the juvenile umbrella. At this point the teen is with other family members, reports say.
The Forsyth News says the mother has two other children, believed to be older, but it’s unclear exactly where they live or who they are.
A Texas woman is believed to have sexually assaulted her teenage nephew hundreds of times over the course of several years.
From 2007 through 2009, Peggy Phillips would allegedly have sex with her 15- to 16-year-old nephew while she was still married to his uncle. According to KHOU, the sexual assault began when the boy was in the hospital for unknown reasons. The relationship continued when the victim moved from South Carolina into the couple’s Pasadena home, where the pair then had sex “hundreds of times,” court documents state.
The New York Daily News also reports that the 43-year-old would send the teen illicit photos and text messages. According to the uncle, the boy moved in due to “a bad situation in South Carolina” but things became worse when he moved into their home in the summer of 2008. The uncle is no longer married to Phillips.
The 43-year old is charged with sexual assault of a child and is held on a $30,000 bond. However, it is unclear what caused charges to be laid down eight years after the incident.
An Emory University law student and political hopeful was arrested last Friday for allegedly beating and starving her 2-year-old foster daughter to death.
PEOPLE reports that Jennifer Rosenbaum — who is also a former police officer — was charged with murder, aggravated assault, second-degree child cruelty and two counts of first-degree child cruelty for the Nov. 17 death of Laila Marie Daniel. Along with her husband Joseph Rosenbaum (who is facing two counts of child cruelty), they are believed to have malnourished and abused the little girl from June 13 until her death last month.
Jennifer had recently announced her candidacy for the 2016 Henry County Board of Commissioners, per WTVM-TV.
According to an affidavit, Jennifer hit Daniel in the stomach “with such force that [Laila’s] pancreas was transected. The child was believed to enter shock due to blood loss resulting from the injury.”
In addition to “failing to feed [Daniel] in quantities necessary to sustain an adequate body weight,” arrest warrants obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution claim Jennifer would also beat her 4-year-old daughter and make “her state that she fell down if anyone asks her about the injuries.”
The warrant also said: “Laila Daniel also sustained bone breaks about her body that Joseph Rosenbaum knew about, or should have known about, and failed to provide adequate care for the child.”
However, Jennifer Rosenbaum’s attorney, Corrine Mull, told PEOPLE that the injuries were possibly caused by a former foster parent. Though it is unclear how Daniel got into the Rosenbaums’ custody, The Journal-Constitution pointed out that they were “fictive kin,” which means the pair were caregivers related to or close to the family.
Mull claims that Daniels came into the home on July 24 — though the affidavit states that injuries began on June 13. “It’s a matter of dating the injuries and determining how much are old injuries done by older foster parents,” she said. “The story isn’t: ‘A poor mother who left her kid in foster care.’ Well, why are they in foster care? That’s the question that should be asked.”
Daniel Holtzclaw, a former Oklahoma City cop, sobbed dramatically in court on Thursday as a jury convicted him of raping eight women while on the job in a low-income neighborhood.
Holtzclaw, who also celebrated his 29th birthday yesterday (happy birthday!), was convicted on 18 counts involving eight of the 13 women who accused him, all of whom were African-American. He was also acquitted on 18 counts.
The jury recommended he serve a total of 263 years for his disturbing crimes, though Holtzclaw’s official sentencing has not occurred yet — that is slated to happen on Jan. 21.
According to CNN, the jury deliberated for more than 40 hours over a four-day period.
Holtzclaw was found guilty on six counts of sexual battery, four counts of forcible oral sodomy, four counts of rape in the first degree, three counts of lewd exhibition, and one count of rape in the second degree.
After the hearing, Oklahoma County District Attorney David Prater noted that, ”Justice was done today, and a criminal wearing a uniform is going to prison now.”
Prater also reportedly said, “In those counts where the not guilty verdicts came back, they determined that we didn’t prove those cases beyond a reasonable doubt. It doesn’t mean they didn’t believe the victims.”
Holtclaw’s victims include everyone from teenage girls to a grandmother in her fifties. All of the women testified against him at trial.
His lawyer tried to portray the women as less than credible witnesses because some of them had prior arrest records and drug histories. The prosecution, however, argued that Holtzclaw purposefully sought out vulnerable women who were less likely to be believed if they reported the crimes.
Diana Franklin was convicted last month on 19 counts of child cruelty, eight counts of false imprisonment, and one count of aggravated assault. The case was described as one of the worst ever seen by the Taylor County Sheriff.
Franklin was accused of confining her adopted daughter with minimal food or water in everything from a garage to an outhouse to a chicken coop for weeks on end as punishment if the child disobeyed her mother. The punishment did not abate overnight or in the case of frigid temperatures. In addition, Franklin was accused of beating the child and making her wear a “shock collar” normally used on dogs if she refused to perform manual labor when Franklin demanded it.
The girl, now 18, had been in Franklin’s custody from age 10 until she was 15, when the abuse was discovered. She was then removed from the home. She testified that at one point when she was 15, she threatened to run away and Franklin took her into the kitchen, removed a gun from her purse, and put it to the child’s head.
Franklin reportedly testified that she had kept her daughter outside to keep her away from her husband, who had allegedly been sexually abusing the girl. Franklin’s husband will be tried for those allegations, but no date for has been set yet. Franklin reportedly kept journals of the punishment she doled out on the child, and at one point, Judge Bobby Peters noted that Franklin, a Civil War re-enactor, would refer to the child as a “slave.”
Judge Peters noted during sentencing that Franklin showed no remorse during the trial. Franklin was sentenced to a combined 190 years in jail on 28 guilty verdicts. An appeal is expected to be filed any day.
A New Mexico man apparently decided to rob his mother. And not of her money or valuables, but her coveted stew.
According to The Smoking Gun, Jonathan Ray broke into his mom’s home at 11 p.m. and “went straight to the fridge and grabbed a pot of posole that she had made.” He then took the pot and ran out the back door.
The Albuquerque Journal reports that the 23-year-old had texted his mother first, telling her he was hungry and was coming over to eat.
“She believes her son may have either kicked the two wheels off the garage door, or forced the garage door open, causing the wheels to fall off,” a police report read.
This isn’t the first time that Ray showed up as an unwelcome guest. Days prior to the stew brouhaha, the man’s mother called police because she found Ray setting up camp in her garage. The Smoking Gun reports that she made it clear that she “does not want him back and he is not allowed in her home.”
Despite boosting an odd item, police opted to charge the 23-year-old with a felony charge of residential burglary — a decision his mother agreed with. He is currently booked at the Bernalillo County jail.
“He needs help,” she commented.
A 5-year-old girl says her mother’s boyfriend beat her and made her eat her own vomit. Now her father is trying to get full custody.
The Orlando Sentinel reports that the little girl, who was not identified because of her age, ate too much and accidentally threw up on the dinner table. That’s when she says her mother’s boyfriend, 28-year-old Todd Brisebois, lost his temper and made her eat what she threw up.
The report says Brisebois also told the child that if she didn’t eat it, he would get the rubber house and punish her. Though the child ate the vomit, she says Brisebois hit her several times anyway.
The report also says Brisebois’ alleged abuse didn’t stop there. The 5-year-old told authorities that the man would wake her up in the middle of the night and force her to do push-ups until she was sore. He also allegedly put her on the top shelf of the closet, gave her two black eyes, and beat her on the back with a hose multiple times.
Police heard the horrifying accounts of how she was allegedly abused by “Mr. Todd”every night she stayed with her mom. (According to the custody arrangement, the victim’s mother would have her for four nights a week and her father would keep her for the other nights.)
The child’s father says he knew about the abuse and tried to report it to the Florida Department of Children and Families several times, but nothing was ever done.
With nowhere left to turn, the victim’s father says he started videotaping his daughter talking about “Mr. Todd.” He also documented the marks on her back from the alleged abuse. By this past November, the father had had enough, and contacted the police directly.
The child’s mother claims it was made up so the father would be able to get full custody, but police say when the questioned the little girl, she did not appear to have been coached.
The mother has not been arrested yet, but Brisebois was. The report says he was out on bail and ordered not to have any contact with the child.
At this time, the little girl is in her father’s care while the investigation continues.
Thousand of fleas literally sucked the blood out of a dog, killing him just minutes after he was rescued.
The dog’s owner, Josefina Baldera Solis, was convicted of misdemeanor animal cruelty.WTVR says a judge has now issued Solis a six-month active sentence behind bars for what she did. The judge also forbade her from ever owning an animal again.
Golden, described as an adult mixed breed, was heard crying his heart out for at least eight hours throughout one rainy September night before someone finally called for help.
The neighbor in Prince George County, VA — identified as Amanda Hoios — told WTVR,“I had never heard an animal that sad in my life.” Hoios was so concerned she went up to try to help Golden. She added, “When I helped him move, I noticed all the fleas. I never saw so many fleas in all my life.”
“When the pound came, he could not lift his head off the ground. It was the saddest thing I’ve ever seen,” Hios said.
The fleas were so fierce and active, Animal Control Officer Job Greene said they immediately covered the officer who responded as well. Greene said his officer knew Golden was in “dire straits” and she drove him directly to the Disputanta Animal Hospital. Sadly, Golden did not survive the drive.
A necropsy was performed and the doctor said Golden’s coat, according to the report, was “almost completely covered with fleas.” They literally sucked the life right out of him.
Greene told the station this was the harshest sentence he’d ever seen during the course of his job. But Hios said, based on what she saw, it wasn’t strong enough. Hois added, “She should have gotten more”.
A New York father and son are believed to not only have stolen $41,000 in chicken wings from a restaurant, but they were caught trying to resell them.
According to the New York Daily News, Joshua, 33 and Paul Rojek, 56 allegedly stole the goods from Twin Trees Too Restaurant in Syracuse, where they worked as cooks. The duo is believed to have made chicken-wing orders to the wholesaler — but they would boost the food, then bill the restaurant.
Carrying out this scheme, it’s believed the Rojeks rung up about $41,000 in chicken wings to the company. Syracuse.com reports they would take the loot and then sell it to local businesses at a discounted rate. From there, they would dispose of sales transaction receipts produced from the deal.
Both Joshua and Paul were arrested and charged with third-degree grand larceny and first-degree falsifying business records. According to CNY Central, the 56-year-old was arrested for a similar crime in 2014 when he stole chicken wings from another eatery.
A San Bernardino woman was arrested for nearly decapitating her young son in a failed murder-suicide.
The San Bernardino Sun reports that authorities have released the identity of the mother, Maria Isabel Bautista De Lopez, who stabbed her 5-year-old son to death.
Police were called to the home after they received a report of an injured woman and boy. The boy, who died at the scene, is believed to have been nearly beheaded by Bautista De Lopez with an unknown sharp object.
The 46-year-old mother, who was found in the bedroom with her son, was also injured with what is believed to be self-inflicted wounds, police spokesperson Eileen Hards told KTLA-TV.
Following her hospitalization, Bautista De Lopez was arrested on suspicion of murder charges and is currently being held at the West Valley Detention Center without bail. Her boyfriend and his father, who lived in the home’s back residence, have also been questioned by police.
Witnesses reportedly saw officers remove a number of pill bottles from a parked car out front.
One North Carolina family is in shock after a 19-year-old man was killed in a brutal accident during his first day working as a tree trimmer.
Mason Scott Cox of Gastonia had just graduated this year, and was thrilled to start his new job with Crawford Tree Service, where his cousin also worked. But everything went horribly awry on Saturday when the young man filled in for an absent worker and ended up getting sucked into a wood chipper as he tried to throw tree limbs into it.
According to Pix 11, Cox was killed immediately, and his new coworkers were horrified. The owner of the company reportedly had a heart attack after seeing what had happened.
Officers have determined that Cox’s death was an accident, but his grieving family is pursuing an investigation into how the whole thing happened — and whether he was unsupervised at the time of the incident.
A Flagler County, Florida, teacher is in hot water for reportedly making a Pre-K student unclog a toilet with his bare hands.
Mom Tiffany Huffman told WKMG-TV that the incident began when Rymfire Elementary School’s toilets clogged, and it was blamed on one particular student.
“The teacher said he used too much toilet paper and made him reach his hand in the toilet and grab out the toilet paper with his bare hands. He felt like people were watching him have to do this. He was humiliated,” Huffman said of her son.
To make matters worse, Huffman claims the child’s teacher, who has worked at the school for four years, was less than receptive to her complaint, saying that the toilet was clean when the kid was directed to unclog it.
Huffman told WESH-TV“It’s endangering his health. I realized afterwards that there was cuts on his hands but like the bacteria, anything could set in on those cuts.” She also says that her son didn’t wash his hands after carrying out the teacher’s requested deed.
Following the incident, Flagler County School District released a statement, saying: “We take these allegations seriously… an investigation was immediately launched.” WKMG-TV reports that the county will decide this week whether the teacher will be formally disciplined.
Authorities believe a 91-year-old woman who was found dead in her bed suffocated during a sex romp with her much younger, married neighbor.
The Mirror reports that the elderly Portugese woman was discovered nude from the waist down by Ana Martins, another neighbor who noted that a vibrator — which cops believe is responsible for extensive injuries to her genitals — was near her body.
“I noticed only two small bruises on her face, but there was blood on the sheets and a picture of her husband resting on her chest,” Martins said. Martins also decribed the elderly woman as a widower who was “very active” and “liked to make jokes with men.”
Portuguese police originally arrested a father of two after his DNA was found in semen located at the scene. Since being bailed out, autopsy results suggest the 91-year-old woman’s death was a freak accident — as she suffocated during a sex game with the 49-year-old. Police also noted that there was no indication of forced entry.
You can probably imagine what a Florida trooper thought after he pulled over a man driving 110 mph on Alligator Alley (a Florida highway). Now imagine what he thought when the driver got out of the car and didn’t have a stitch of clothing on.
The Naples Daily News says police began to receive calls about a Cadillac driving recklessly on Saturday afternoon around 3 p.m. A Trooper from the Florida Highway Patrol responded and said he followed the car for about 10 minutes.
After the trooper estimated the man’s speed to be around 110 mph, he pulled the car over.
The report says the trooper walked up to the side of the car and noticed the driver did not have a shirt on. He also noticed an open 12-pack of Corona beers on the front seat.
That’s when 33-year-old Noe Dejesus was asked to step out of the car. Dejesus got out, and he was stark naked, the report said.
Dejesus was placed under arrest after the trooper not only noticed his bloodshot eyes, but the fact that he smelled of alcohol and had slurred speech. He declined a field sobriety test. No word on what happened to the three women who were reportedly inside the car with Dejesus.
Dejesus was charged with DUI and he’s also facing a misdemeanor charge of driving without a license, the report noted. He does have a past history of arrests involving alcohol and drugs.
A Dallas man received a 15-month prison sentence for burning a 2½-month-old Chihuahua puppy named Buddy on a stove. Suffering from fourth-degree burns, the pup was put to sleep due to his extensive wounds.
Bradley Boley took the puppy, put him in a kennel, then placed the kennel atop his stove as punishment for biting his wrist. Boley claimed his old stove didn’t work. But according to The Dallas Morning News, Buddy suffered horrific injuries — sustaining burns on 100 percent of its tiny body.
The dog was discovered by a neighbor who reportedly heard its cries of pain and came over to make sure everything was OK. By the time Boley took the dog to a vet, Buddy reportedly had burnt plastic melted onto his face, nose, legs, and ears, and a vet worker said the entire clinic filled with the scent of burnt plastic.
According to WFAA-TV, in court the 61-year-old man said the dog must have figured out how to turn the oven on with its paw while restrained in the kennel.
“Are you telling me this man could not smell plastic and hair and flesh burning? He wants you to believe he heard nothing, he smelled nothing?” Assistant District Attorney Felicia Kerney also said: “Really? Buddy reached his paw through the cage and turned the stove on? He should have been making money off of Buddy if he was able to do that.”
Boley’s brother claimed he was a “starving artist” who supposedly “loved” animals. Boley supposedly suffered from depression, and one of his attorneys reportedly said he was on suicide watch “because he didn’t want to be labeled a puppy killer.”
The 10-person jury deliberated for seven hours before reaching a “guilty” verdict. Though he was sentenced to 15 months behind bars, Boley will get credit for the year he’s already served in jail.
A 22-year-old burglary suspect who was hiding from cops in Florida met quite the unfortunate end last month.
Matthew Riggins was reportedly killed — and partially eaten — by an aggro alligator in Melbourne’s Barefoot Bay Lake in November. Investigators found some of the man’s remains inside a massive alligator that had recently been euthanized after it acted aggressively toward officials.
It all started on Nov. 13, when, according to USA Today, Riggins told his girlfriend he’d be heading out to Barefoot Bay to go on a little burgling spree with a buddy (the friend is now in custody). Police responded to calls from witnesses who reportedly spotted two men in black prowling behind local homes. (By then, Riggins had reportedly called his girlfriend back to tell her he was laying low and trying to hide.)
Though officers heard “yelling” when they searched the area later that evening, they couldn’t find the source of the cries, and they didn’t see the prowlers.
That all changed 10 days later, when Riggins’ body was discovered in the lake with injuries consistent with an alligator attack. Which makes sense, because divers reportedly encountered none other than an aggressive 11-foot alligator while recovering the suspect’s body.
Riggins drowned during the brutal attack after being dragged underwater by the creature. His body had “injuries that were consistent with an alligator attack,” according to Maj. Tod Goodyear. “We had trappers euthanize the gator and when we opened it up, there were some remains inside that were consistent with injuries found on the body.”
A South Carolina man who was arrested for acting erratically at a bank allegedly told authorities that he was “turning into the Hulk.”
WSPA-TV reports that a concerned citizen contacted cops after seeing a man in his car who refused to leave the bank parking lot. That man was Cale Strickland — and cops witnessed him shaking uncontrollably in his running vehicle. In preliminary documents, authorities wrote that Strickland “appeared to be intoxicated and started to talk to imaginary people and was not making any sense.”
Though he was restrained, EMS services were called. Paramedics determined the 30-year-old’s heart was beating 120 times per minute. However, he reportedly declined treatment because “the body could do this and he was turning into the Hulk but would not turn green.”
Following the stint, Strickland was arrested and charged with public disorderly conduct. He is booked at the Spartanburg County Detention Center.
A 54-year-old man was arrested in Polk County this week for allegedly leaving the scene of a crash after hitting a bicyclist. At the time of the crash, reports say, he was allegedly receiving oral sex from a woman in his vehicle.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office posted on its Facebook page that Randy Joe Allen was taken into custody after a witness gave police information to help track him down. The report says the witness not only gave authorities a partial tag number, but that Good Samaritan also stopped to help the victim.
The person who was struck and killed has been identified as 49-year-old Terry Lamunt Ross, who was described as homeless. WFLA says Ross was riding his bike westbound on the road’s shoulder when Allen’s green F-250 headed directly toward him. Ross was thrown off his bicycle and his body hit the truck and landed on the side of the road, the report added.
The Good Samaritan actually saw the crash, the report said, and she told her father to follow the truck and get the tag number. Then they drove back to the scene to try to help Ross.
When police tracked down Allen, he was found at a local bar, where he was slurring his words. He told authorities, according to the report, that he thought he had hit a stop sign or guardrail. “He told the detectives he had been distracted by his passenger,” WFLA said.
WFLA reports that police then tracked down the woman in Allen’s car, who Allen had apparently met at the bar. She was found at a local motel. The woman reportedly told authorities she was giving Allen oral sex when she felt a bump in the road. Allen apparently told her not to worry because it was just a stop sign.
The Polk County Sheriff’s office arrested and charged Allen with leaving the scene of a deadly crash. Authorities believe he had been intoxicated, but they are awaiting results of a blood test to confirm. He reportedly had seven previous arrests, including a DUI.
Apparently this is how some people get in the holiday spirit.
An Oregon woman is accused of driving around and forcing her 9-year-old daughter to steal packages from the front porches of various homes after the items had been delivered. The woman would wait in the car while the child was committing the thefts, according to Fox 8.
Per CBS 4, someone actually witnessed one such bizarre incident happening on Dec. 2, took a picture, and gave police a description of the woman’s car.
The following day, officers tracked the woman down to her home in Oregon City. Mary Palmer-Correa, 49, reportedly had several of the stolen items inside her house, and police has managed to return some of the items to their rightful owners. Some of the recovered items were reportedly pillows, books, cups, lights, and a TV wall mount, according to officials.
Palmer-Cornea is reportedly being held in the Clackamas County Jail on second-degree theft charges.
Four fifth-graders in New Jersey were arrested for hatching a plan to bomb a local high school. According to NBC New York, that plot was “immature and unrealistic,” but it was first believed to be serious enough to prompt being detained by authorities.
The report says an actual device was found, but luckily there were only kitchen items inside. Those items included a mint tin filled with vegetable oil, salad dressing and cinnamon sticks, the report noted. They were placed inside an empty mini Altoid tin can, NJ.com said.
After a swift investigation, the “bomb” was deemed not flammable or dangerous. In addition, NBC New York says none of the students from Clifton Elementary had any type of lighting device.
The four students, ages 10 and 11 — two of whom are girls — were detained during a school field trip on Wednesday. Their names are not being released to the public because they are all juveniles. The motive in the plan was revenge against a student from the local high school who had been bullying them. It’s not clear if that high school student has been identified and questioned.
Although no one was injured, the superintendent told reporters there was definitely “intent to do harm.” The children were initially detained, but never formally booked or charged with crimes. At first five were arrested, but that number went down to four.
Because of their involvement with this incident, NBC says those children will all have to undergo counseling and psychiatric evaluations before being allowed to attend classes again.
A video of a toddler allegedly smoking marijuana is not only sparking outrage, but is prompting a formal police investigation in Chicago, Ill.
The 14-second clip shows a toddler-aged child, dressed in a diaper, inhaling what appears to be a blunt of some sort. A man can be heard off-camera encouraging the young child to inhale and pass it along.
The Chicago Sun Times reports that anti-violence activist Andrew Holmes received a tip from a “nervous-looking woman” who approached him and asked him to view what she’d uncovered on Facebook. The woman, according to the report, told Holmes she recognized him from TV.
Holmes told the publication, “I said, ‘Oh my God! You know the child? Do you know anyone in this video?’ “The woman told him she did not.
After that exchange, Holmes told the woman to call police. She said she would prefer if Holmes did the calling – so he did.
Holmes told the Chicago Sun Times he copied the video from the woman’s phone and then filed a child endangerment complaint directly with the Chicago Police.
It does not appear, at this point, that the parents or the child in the disturbing clip have been identified, so the investigation continues. If you look closely it appears the child is sitting at a small blue and red desk, on a small chair. There are moments when the blur comes off his face, and you can see what he looks like.
