Weird news of the week.
Never trust the babysitter.
A California nanny with a suspiciously sunny mugshot has been arrested after allegedly being caught on a hidden camera trying to suffocate a crying baby.
According to KRON 4, the 20-year-old Livermore woman, Moriah Gonzales, was busted on February 19 on felony child abuse charges.
She was reportedly hired through the babysitting website Care.com. According to KRON, the parents of the 13-month-old boy called the police and turned over incriminating video the morning of Feb. 18.
The video reportedly shows Gonzales trying to put the crying baby down for a nap, then putting her hands over his face as he “begins to kick and squirm” before eventually going limp. She then reportedly lifts him out of the crib and he (fortunately) returns to normal.
When police contacted the woman, she reportedly denied hurting the child. Her arraignment is slated for today.
Care.com released a statement saying they’re “deeply troubled” by the incident.
A Texas man with a … unique full-face skull tattoo is accused of assaulting his girlfriend because he didn’t believe her unborn child was his.
KCBD reports that Jacob Pauda, who is pictured in the memorable mugshot, questioned the victim about the child’s paternity. This allegedly led to Pauda punching her in the face repeatedly and telling her, “Don’t try and scratch me or it will be worse for you.”
The apparent attack didn’t stop there. The 30-year-old then allegedly went to the kitchen and retrieved a butcher knife. When he couldn’t get to his running girlfriend, he dropped the weapon, grabbed the woman and knocked her on the ground. After he he reportedly kicked her while she was down, the victim claimed Pauda admitted he was high on cocaine.
Though Pauda fled his home with his two sons, he was later arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He is being held at Lubbock County Detention Center on a $100,000 bond.
It’s been more than 20 years since Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman were found stabbed to death at Nicole’s home in Brentwood, California, and within that time, the murder weapon was never recovered.
Los Angeles police have reportedly opened a “top secret investigation” into a knife that was allegedly found buried on the grounds of OJ Simpson‘s estate sometime after 1998. A construction worker originally unearthed the knife and then handed it over to an off-duty traffic cop working security at a movie shoot across the street from the property. But instead of turning the knife over to investigators, the officer reportedly took the knife home as a keepsake.
This cop was allegedly aware that Simpson had been tried and acquitted in the murders a few years earlier, yet he reportedly kept a knife found buried in the ground on Simpson’s property despite the fact that it could very well be new evidence.
The only reason the LAPD has the knife now is because that same cop, who recently retired, asked a buddy in the department to look up the case number for the 1994 murders. Why? Because he wanted to get it engraved on the frame of the special display box he was using to hold this potentially tragic treasure.
His friend on the force reported the knife’s existence to his superiors. Investigators confiscated the knife and it’s been sent to the lab to be tested for DNA, hair and fingerprints. According to the New York Daily News, “cops who saw the rusted knife believe it could have blood on it, but it’s impossible to say for sure before the test results come back.”
OJ Simpson is currently serving a 33-year prison sentence in a Nevada correctional facility after being found guilty of armed robbery and kidnapping in a 2007 Las Vegas hotel incident.
An Alabama woman was arrested after she was allegedly depicted in a viral video high on spice while taking care of her toddler.
AL.com reports that there was widespread outrage after a video showing Lauren Englett, who appeared to be under the influence with her baby nearby, hit the internet. It led to tons of calls and emails pushing for authorities to arrest the 18-year-old woman.
The footage, which was uploaded to Facebook, allegedly shows the mom and her friend Jamie Jemison sitting on a porch, rocking back and forth, slumped over, and not saying anything. The baby is seen sitting on a cushion, and Jemison appears to hand the baby a bottle. Later on in the video, the baby is seen standing up crying with the bottle on the floor as the pair appear to slump over and ignore him.
“The mother admitted being on spice to us,” Lori Myles, public affairs officer of the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office, commented. “There are several things wrong with this. Including that the person taking the video didn’t notify authorities of a child in danger.”
Englett has been charged with reckless endangerment and domestic violence, according to WKRG. Rachel Rikard, who is believed to have taken the footage, and Jemison were arrested on Tuesday and charged with reckless endangerment, a recent AL.com article reports.
An Indiana mother’s boyfriend has been arrested after authorities say he allegedly “scalped” her 3-year-old child.
The Howard County Sheriff’s Office says that on Feb. 23, 35-year-old Andrew Milburn took his girlfriend’s daughter to his parents’ house without her mom. Around 9 p.m., Milburn and the little girl returned home. According to investigators, Noel Maxwell, the girls mother, was asleep at the time.
Maxwell said she woke up and went into her daughter’s room to find that something horrible had happened to her daughter. Fox 59 reports that the child had “extensive swelling” on the side of her head. When questioned about what happened to her, Milburn said she must have fallen down while on the visit to his parents.
Maxwell rushed her daughter to the hospital, where doctors said they didn’t believe her injuries were consistent with a fall at all. Instead, according to the report, doctors believe the child was scalped.
Scalping is when the actual scalp is removed from the skull, Fox 59 said. This practice does cause internal bleeding, swelling and extensive swelling; according to the report, the blood settles around the skull.
Along with the alleged scalping, authorities believe the little girl was also hit multiple times on her head and her hair was pulled. Milburn was actually at the hospital when doctors figured out what was going on, and he was promptly arrested.
The suspect is now being held on a $25,000 bond at the Howard County jail. He is facing a preliminary charge of battery resulting in serious bodily injury. The Howard County Sheriff’s department says the case is still open and the investigation will continue.
A Pennsylvania grand jury has determined that hundreds of children were sexually abused over the course of four decades.
Penn Live reports that the abuse was widespread, involving at least 50 priests or religious leaders at the diocese. Not only are hundreds of children believed to have been victimized, but a 147-page report claims superiors were anything but inactive — helping to cover up these heinous occurrences.
“Pray for the victims,” said Rev. Dennis Kurdziel at a noontime Mass mere hours after the grand jury report went public, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “Pray for your bishop, pray for your priests. I need your prayers. Ask for God’s help, even on this very ugly day.”
Two people implicated in the coverup are Bishops James Hogan and Joseph Adamec, who led Catholic Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown from the mid-1960s to 2011. Investigators reportedly found letters written between the two detailing ongoing abuse and their knowledge of a concealment. In addition to information about the victims and offending priests, FOX 43 reports they took about 115,042 from the Diocese.
Bishop Adamec didn’t speak at the grand jury hearing, invoking his fifth amendment rights.
“The heinous crimes these children endured are absolutely unconscionable,” state Attorney General Kathleen Kane said. “These predators desecrated a sacred trust and preyed upon their victims in the very places where they should have felt most safe.”
Though some of these cases occurred nearly half a century ago, spokesperson for the Pennsylvania Catholic Conference Amy B. Hill told the Catholic News Service that Pennsylvania statute of limitations for sexual abuse allowing a “age 20 to age 50 for criminal prosecutions and age 20 to age 30 for civil actions.”
A Florida mom is accused of purposely leaving her young daughter behind in a burning apartment.
Erica Rosello of Miami was charged with child neglect for not allegedly doing even the bare minimum to rescue her screaming 5-year-old.
“The bed was literally two feet from the window and I happened to see the little girl,”Miami-Dade Firefighter David Arrencibia said. According to CBS News, firefighters saved the girl, who they could hear crying when they arrived on the scene.
Not only is Rosello accused of fleeing the apartment, but arrest reports obtained byPeople say that when a neighbor saw her leaving with smoke coming from the door, the 32-year-old denied the situation, saying “No, it’s not a fire.”
Authorities determined the blaze was from an oil fire in the kitchen. Rosello is believed to have attempted to put out the fire with water.
Later, she called her mother, telling her mom, “Grace is dead.” According to Pix11, her mother replied, “What do you mean Grace is dead? No, Grace is here in the hospital.”
Though she experienced smoke inhalation, the child was released from a local hospital and expected to be OK. The court has given custody to her grandmother, Angelica Tabio, who told police her daughter suffers from postpartum depression and recently stopped taking her medication for clinical depression. Tabio reportedly said after a court hearing, “This could have been prevented. I have asked for help. We have asked for help numerous times. …”
Rosello was apprehended and arrested at the hospital. She’s been charged with child neglect. Barred from contacting her mother and daughter, she is currently under house arrest.
Looks like this young Idaho woman caught her husband in the act — er, trying to engage in the act, at least. And she allegedly caught it all on tape.
Even worse? The man was reportedly aiming to cheat on her with her very best friend.
According to the Daily Mail, Leslie Varner, 25, of Boise was understandably upset when she heard that her husband of three years had been messaging her BFF Sam on Facebook, trying to arrange a hookup. So the two plotted to nab him in the act: Sam invited him over to her house, ostensibly for a sexy rendezvous, while Leslie waited there and confronted him on camera at the front door.
The ensuing video was shared on Facebook, where it has since been seen more than 2.5 million times. The woman’s husband, Cody Levi Varner, seems vaguely surprised to see her there, but makes no attempt to explain himself.
Watch the video for yourself below. Do you buy it? Was Leslie too hard on him — or not hard enough?
Shaunda Lee Bennett of Lubbock, Texas was reportedly arrested for abandonment of a child after cops showed up at her apartment and found her 3-year-old daughter alone.
Per CBS 7, the child told officers, “I need a beer,” as well as saying she was hungry multiple times.
Cops who arrived at the woman’s apartment were shocked by what they found there. The child was reportedly “dirty and covered in red bumps,” and the apartment was filthy — according to the police report, “There were piles of dirty and moldy dishes on the counter, stove, and sink,” and “cockroaches absolutely everywhere.”
One of the responding officers noted in the report that he “had probable cause to believe that [the little girl] had not been fed, washed, or provided with any type of general medical care or treatment for an unsafe amount of time.”
Shaunda Lee Bennett, 42, was arrested and held at the Lubbock County Detention Center in lieu of a $15,000 bond, according to CBS7, but the NY Daily News report that she’s been released.
The child is apparently now with Child Protective Services, and a friend of Bennett’s says the incident was a misunderstanding and that the mom was doing the best she could.
In what sounds like the plot of a horror film, French authorities say that a group of twenty-somethings who had rented a house in the Palaiseau area southwest of Paris for the weekend found a gruesome surprise when they entered the garden on Saturday afternoon.
Under a batch of tree branches, they found the badly decomposed body of what is believed to have been a Caucasian woman in her early 40s. The woman had been dressed, but they could find no coat or other protection against the elements. She was wearing a ring with a large stone, but no identifying papers were anywhere near the body. That area of the property was not fenced, and it was described as “forest undergrowth” that opened out into a wooded area. Foul play is suspected.
Bertrand Daillie, the deputy prosecutor on the investigation, said that the placement of the tree branches over the body appeared to have been deliberate. An autopsy was unable to pin down the cause of death, but did determine that the woman had been dead for at least a month. French authorities have scheduled other forensic testing for later this week.
The group renting the home were reportedly questioned by authorities on Sunday. The actual owners of the seven-bedroom 19th Century French home, a family of seven who had been on vacation and not due back until Wednesday, will be questioned by authorities when they return. When police contacted the owner, he reportedly told them that he was horribly distraught at the possibility that his children could have been the ones to discover the body.
This middle-aged bald dude must have really been feeling some internal pressure, because he allegedly went a Rogaine-stealing spree in a series of bold (er, bald?) local drugstore thefts.
Per the Smoking Gun, the man — whom police are still hunting for — boosted the hair loss treatment from various local pharmacies near Cincinnati. In one heist, he also nabbed a “brain health supplement.”
Cops said he’s believed to be responsible for stealing several thousands of dollars worth of the product, and apparently he removed the goop from its packaging before leaving the stores.
He was reportedly spotted driving a white jeep Cherokee.Weird Weird Weird Weird
The family of a 7-year-old boy was heartbroken after passengers on an Allegiant Air plane broke into wild rounds of applause when the child was removed the plane after experiencing an allergic reaction. (The little boy’s medical incident prompted a 90-minute take-off delay.)
Giovanni Alvarado, 7, was reportedly on a “bucket list” trip with his mom, Christina, and his terminally ill father George Alvarado, who has stage four throat cancer, per the Daily Mail. George reportedly doesn’t have much time left.
They were returning home to Phoenix from a trip to Washington state to see family when the child had an allergic reaction to a dog onboard the plane. The child’s reaction — he broke out in hives — caused the flight’s departure to be delayed for about 90 minutes, and then the child and his family were asked to leave the flight.
It’s what happened next that caused an uproar —the Daily Mail claims “passengers at the back of the plane began clapping as the family exited the aircraft, hurting the child’s feelings.”
The little boy was upset because their trip had been intended to be a time to build new, pleasant memories with his ailing father — instead, the father said he felt “hopeless” about the way the passengers reacted.
The little boy’s mom, Christina, reportedlysaid she wasn’t upset about being asked to leave the flight; she wanted Giovanni to be safe and healthy, after all. But “What crushed us was that our seven-year-old boy looked at us with tear-filled eyes and said, “I’m sorry that I put you through this. This is all my fault.”
She also said that as a result of being kicked off the flight, the family was forced to postpone George’s next chemotherapy treatment and pay hundreds of dollars in additional expenses.
A spokesman for Allegiant Airlines responded to the incident, telling the Mail, “We are truly sorry for the unfortunate circumstances surrounding their planned itinerary and for the inconvenience they have experienced as a result.”
According to CNN, a woman in Moscow carried the severed head of a child she was babysitting into a subway station there, and was caught on tape waving it around.
The woman was, fortunately, arrested. CNN says Moscow police believe the child was a4-year-old disabled girl named Nastya M.
There’s a video of the woman, who was dressed entirely in black, prowling around outside the station saying things like, “I am a terrorist. I hate democracy.”
It’s still unconfirmed, but LifeNews identified the woman as Gulchekhra Bobokulova, from Uzbekistan. She was reportedly working illegally as a nanny in Russia, and may have had “manic psychosis.”
Officials are considering this a murder investigation, not a terrorism case. She is reportedly being tested for drugs and receiving a psychiatric evaluation. She could face up to 20 years in jail if found fit to stand trial, according to Daily Mail.
According to The Daily Mail, the nanny had been working for the little girl’s family for about 18 months. The dead child’s mother was reportedly rushed to the hospital after going unconscious when hearing about her daughter’s vicious death.
A witness on the scene said he hadn’t at first believed the head was real. “I thought she just went mad… When I saw the head I started shaking… I saw the child’s face and blood coming from it. It was very scary.”
According to the Investigative Committee, the body of a beheaded child was found in an apartment fire earlier in the day. The suspect reportedly “waited until the child’s parents left the apartment with an older child, then killed the child and set the apartment on fire.”
