Weird news of the week.
One of the first people to file a lawsuit against Flint, Michigan for contaminated water has been found shot to death. Her murder comes mere days after the city’s water plant foreman was also found dead under suspicious circumstances.
Sasha Avonna Bell reported that her 1-year-old was being negatively affected by lead poisoning stemming from Flint’s contaminated water. BET reports that the 19-year-old woman accused six companies and three government employees of failing to ensure the drinking water was safe for consumption. (It was not safe for consumption, as it is now widely known.)
The teen was found dead along with another woman, Sacorya Renee Reed, inside a home at approximately 9 pm. According to MLive, her child was found uninjured at the scene. On Saturday, a man named Malek Emmanuel Thornton was charged with felony firearm, two counts of first-degree murder, and two counts of open murder in connection to their deaths.
Some speculate that Bell’s murder is connected to the unexplained death of Flint Water Treatment Plant foreman Matthew McFarland, who was questioned by authorities investigating the crisis. The 43-year-old was found dead in his Otter Lake Home on April 16, the Daily Mail reports. The cause of his death is not known.
Investigators in Virginia believe a toddler girl died while baking in a hot car as her mother’s boyfriend, a convicted felon, allegedly drank beer inside at her place.
NBC 4 reports 32-year-old Daiquan Fields had not only had his driving privileges revoked, but he was hanging out at his girlfriend’s drinking beer as the little girl was dying in a hot car. Fields is now reportedly facing a number of charges including child neglect and involuntary manslaughter.
Though the temperature outside was only 70 degrees, authorities say the toddler’s body temperature inside the vehicle soared to 107 degrees. The heat was so bad the baby had second-degree burns on her limbs from where those areas would touch the car seat. She was left inside the car for up to seven hours.
Fields said it may have been his change in routine that day that contributed to this tragedy. NBC 4 said Fields told authorities he normally would drop the 2-year-old off with a babysitter, then he would shuttle his two children, ages 10 and 15, to school.
On the morning the baby died, according to Fields, he was running late taking the other children to their classes, so he skipped the babysitter and took them directly to their school. He said he dropped the 15-year-old off first, then the 10-year-old, but forgot to drop the youngest off at the babysitter.
After leaving the two older children, Fields went to his girlfriend’s apartment and the toddler was left in the car seat.
It wasn’t until much later in the day, according to the report, when the girlfriend needed to be picked up from work when he realized the child was still in the back. Fields called police and told them the baby had fluid dripping from her nose and she was blue. He also told authorities he tried to perform CPR as soon as he found her.
Fairfax City Police department’s Don Goddard spoke to the NBC station and said a change in a daily routine can help contribute to a child being accidentally left in a hot vehicle.
KidsAndCars.org reports seeing children die inside cars on 50-degree days. They say, according to NBC, for parents or guardians to leave a stuffed animal in the front seat of the vehicle to help serve as a reminder that the child is in the back.
A Wrightsville, GA., mother was busted after her son fessed up to eating a breakfast that included one very not-safe-for-kids food group.
It all began when a teacher at the Johnson County Elementary School noticed that a 5-year-old child was acting in an unusual manner, even dozing off early in the morning. That teacher voiced concern, and the boy told school officials that he had eaten a marijuana cake that morning. The school’s principal called local police, and paramedics were dispatched. The paramedics found the boy’s pulse rate to be 200 beats per minute. A normal pulse rate for a 6-year-old sitting in class, according to a pediatrician interviewed by local reporters, should be anywhere between 65 and 135 beats per minute.
The child was taken to a local hospital, where he ended up testing positive for THC. The boy’s mom, 30-year-old Shakirah Wiley, was quickly arrested. When questioned, she told police the cake had been a birthday gift. She said that when she saw the child eating it, she grabbed it as quickly as she could. Wiley has been charged with second-degree child cruelty and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Hoo-boy, that’s quite a headline, huh?
Baltimore police shot a man who threatened to “blow up” a Baltimore TV news station, but it turned out that the “bomb vest” he was wearing under his animal onesie was actually made of chocolate bars. The man, who has not been identified but is described as white and in his 20s, allegedly approached security guard Jourel Apostolidies and tried to enter the station building at around 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 28. According to Gawker, he said he was carrying a flash drive containing information about a vast government conspiracy involving “black holes and the Sun.”
“He had a flash drive, said he had information he wanted to get on the air,” WBFF-TV News Director Mike Tomko told reporters. “He compared it to the information found in the Panama Papers. I told him, ‘I can’t let you in, you’re going to have to leave the flash drive here and slide it through the opening.’ He wouldn’t do that. Apparently he had made some threats before.”
Believing the man had a bomb, Apostolidies called 911 and told everyone in the station to evacuate the building. The Hedgehog Hershey Bomber meandered over to a nearby street where he was first shot by three “non-lethal” rounds before he was taken down by a regular bullet — police apparently feared that there was a risk of him detonating a possible bomb because the man kept his hand in his pocket. After a robot designed to detect explosives confirmed that the man’s vest was actually made out of “chocolate bars and wires,” the man was taken to a local hospital. He’s listed in serious, but stable condition.
There’s still no word on whether his next stop will be prison, the psych ward or the closest 7/11 to stock up on snacks
It’s been nearly a year-long effort to find a missing woman, and now police say they’ve not only discovered her body, but her husband and his brother have also been arrested.
According to St. Louis Post-Dispatch, 57-year-old Linda McLaughlin was preparing to divorce her husband, 58-year-old John Kevin McLaughlin, when she went missing last summer, on June 1.
Since that time, signs about Linda’s disappearance have lined the streets from where she vanished and police have been working on her case. Linda’s neighbors said she enjoyed taking care of her grandchildren, and she was also the owner of a Hoist and Crane business in the area, a company formed in 1988.
The report said on Tuesday, Linda’s body was found in a “remote and secluded part of the state,” and she was buried on a piece of federal property. Fox 2 Now said her husband’s vehicle was also found in the area where the body was dumped in the overnight hours when she went missing.
There appears to be a number of contributing factors of the discovery that links Linda’s husband to the gravesite. St. Louis Post Dispatch said authorities were able to pin him within 20 yards of the grave.
Linda and John were married for 35 years, the report said. She had filed for divorce the year before, in December 2014, and it was quite contentious. Linda claimed in court documents that her husband allegedly booby-trapped other items in their house.
John McLaughlin’s brother, 55-year-old Robert Brian McLaughlin, has also been arrested, pending charges. They were both taken down at their places of employment earlier this week, the report notes.
John McLaughlin is facing a second-degree murder charge and is held on a $2 million bond, Fox 2 Now reports. More charges could be filed against others in the future, the report adds.
Invading someone’s personal space is rude, uncomfortable and, in some cases, threatening. And touching someone without their permission? Definitely threatening! When this elevator-riding creep didn’t keep his hands to himself, the woman he groped made sure to respond in kind.
Surveillance cameras captured the incident, in which the pervy dude can be seen getting too close for her comfort and, after she shrugs him off, he only ups the ante by putting his hands on her. Big mistake. HUGE. Watch as she hits him back with two slaps, a knee to his balls and then another to the gut, leaving him crumpled on the floor like a used tissue.
A French court has sentenced a dentist who pulled his patients’ healthy teeth and left drill bits in their gums to eight years in prison.
Jacobus Van Nierop was accused by 100 people of shoddy dentist work. In addition to pulling healthy teeth, plaintiffs claimed they endured constant infections, abscesses, and deformed mouths, the New York Daily News reports. The court also banned the 51-year-old, who was dubbed the “dentist of horror,” from practicing dentistry for the rest of his life.
Van Nierop was found guilty of 45 counts of mutilation and 61 counts of fraud. From 2009 to 2012, the dentist was also believed to have billed for nonexistent procedures, overcharging patients, and illegally practicing in France, according to NBC News. Though 62 plaintiffs will be awarded damages in June, the dentist of horror was fined $12,000 at sentencing.
Psychiatric experts determined the 51-year-old as having a narcissistic pervert personality devoid of morals and empathy — a stark difference from when he was welcomed in rural Chateau-Chinon in 2008, a town described as a “medical desert.”
The lawyer for one of his patients claimed his client wanted an apology. Van Nierop responded: “I have no feelings anymore. So, if I was offering my apologies today, I would be lying.”
After a four-month investigation,Texas police say they have charged a father with capital murder for allegedly killing his toddler daughter. The motive, authorities say, is because she may have distracted him while he was playing his computer game.
The Star Telegram said 31-year-old Anthony Michael Sanders allegedly attacked and suffocated his daughter, Ellie, on Dec. 12, 2005.
According to police, the murder took place just weeks before Christmas on a Saturday afternoon. On the fatal day, according to authorities, Sanders was watching both of his kids ages 2 and 5 while his wife attended an art show. Around 8:30 p.m. that evening, Sanders’ wife returned home. The report said their son told his parents his sister was asleep on their bed and she would not wake up.
Sanders went to check on Ellie and found her unresponsive. Sanders reportedly yelled for his wife to call 911 and when help arrived; they realized the child did not make it.
The Star Telegram reports Ellie not only had human bite marks on her body, but she had bruising around her eyes, face and head. Doctors said they found blood behind the child’s ear as well.
As for Sanders, he claimed he didn’t have any idea as to what happened. Sanders claims he checked on his daughter 30 minutes prior to her becoming unconscious and she was “laughing” and he even changed her diaper as she watched television.
On April 14, nearly four months after Ellie’s death, Sanders was taken in at his mother’s home in Texas where he’s been held at the North Richland Hills Jail.
Sgt. Jason Babcock spoke out about the case to the Star Telegram, saying, “Just a fit of rage-type deal, anger.” Babcock said their investigation revealed Ellie died because Sanders put his hand over her mouth, allegedly, and held her down.
As for the motive, police believe it was because Sanders was disturbed. “He’s very involved in computer gaming… That’s something he did constantly. She may have interrupted him somehow. His day may have been interrupted.” The NY Daily News said Sanders admitted to being the only adult home at the time his daughter was injured.
The Star Telegram said this is not Sanders’ first brush with the law. In July 2001, he was charged with choking Ellie’s mom, but he was never convicted. The two later married and she gave birth to both children.
As for Ellie’s brother, the state took him out of the house and he is with a family member, the report added.

A father and his fiancé have been convicted and sentenced for starving and severely abusing their young kids after a two-month trial, KOMO News reports. Both were convicted of first and second-degree assault of a child and first-degree criminal mistreatment, the report notes. They will both serve 20 years behind bars.
Reports say a 6-year-old boy, who often dug in school trashcans for leftover food, nearly died after his parents were not only depriving him of food, but abusing him as well. The report said he was tall for 6, but only weighed a little more than 50 pounds. KOMO said his stomach was swollen and his body was showing signs of shutting down by the time he was finally taken to the hospital.
The young boy, only identified as K., was found in March 2014, he was “battered and emaciated,” KOMO said. His parents were identified as 30-year-old Christopher Sefton and his partner, 31-year-old Lori Lloyd. It was during the investigation of K. that authorities figured out the other children in their home had been mistreated as well.
For the investigation as it relates to K., authorities said the child had only been fed hot dog-and-cooking-oil smoothies. The report claimed he was also forced to do calisthenics and was denied sleep for long periods of time. KOMO also said “dozens” of calls to child protective services “failed” to get K. out of the abusive situation.
In fact, the report said Sefton and Lloyd were so controlling and demanding, they threatened to sue the school the school district if they continued to feed K. because they claimed he had “dietary restrictions.”
On the day K. was rescued, the report said he was taken to the emergency room where doctors found his stomach distended from malnutrition. He told police when they were called to the hospital that he was only allowed to eat disgusting milkshakes full of only carrots, water, hot dogs, oil and bits of bread, KOMO notes.
Senior Deputy Prosecutor Cecelia Gregson spoke out to the news station about the deliberate torture of K., “They were using food to torture him. It has the added benefit of trying to kill him, but it was a very effective form of torture.” Gregson added the abuse and withdraw of food was so bad, teachers at the school not only began to weigh K., but they also had a food basket for him so he could eat each day.
The report notes K. and the other children, a 7-year-old girl and another young boy, have been removed from the home and placed with other families.Weird
